Steve Groat is managing director of Alloy Technologies International Pty. Ltd. and interim managing director of T Mag Pty. Ltd. He has worked with product and process development within the light metals casting industry for over thirty years.
Mr. Groat spent a considerable amount of time working in various roles in the light metal industry, which lead to the position of general manager. During his time in these positions, he was successful in winning contracts with GM Holden for a variety of components--for example DOHC cylinder heads and inlet manifolds, which led to development work from concept to final production. This developed into working in tandem with Ricardo, General Motors Corporation Detroit, Bosch and Holden which provided the opportunity to quote on main engine components, including prototype developments and production readiness.
Mr. Groat developed a relationship with Lotus Engineering for product development of their Proton Campro engine; he was rewarded with the casting business for the DOHC cylinder heads for the Campro engines.
In the ongoing years, Mr. Groat developed a strong relationship with Harley Davidson. It developed to the extent that Castalloy was awarded 100% of the alloy wheel and hub business. Through this strong relationship, Castalloy was given the opportunity to develop more than just wheels. They began using their experience to develop strong lightweight structural components, along with designing and manufacturing new concepts of wheels.
In mid-2003, Mr. Groat decided to branch out with a group of his peers and previous customers. He identified a void in this type of activity, hence Alloy Technologies International Pty. Ltd. (ATI) was formed with a vision of being world leaders in product development, materials and innovation. In addition, he has traveled extensively over many years with an interest in new materials and processes, in a quest to stay ahead of the field.
With the view of staying ahead of the field, Mr. Groat has formed a partnership with Flotek Pty. Ltd., SAGE Automation and the Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organization (all are Australian-based). Together, they have formed T-Mag Pty. Ltd. and they are in the process of commissioning and development trials of a new patented Magnesium casting process.
