Dr. Leo Hanifin is the Dean of the College of Engineering and Science at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM). He is also the director of the Michigan Ohio (MIOH) University Transportation Center. The College offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in many disciplines of engineering and science though innovative educational methods.MIOH is a five- university coalition funded by US DOT, MDOT and corporate partners, developing educational programs and performing research in the areas of alternative fuels, transportation systems efficiency, and supply chains.
Dean Hanifin has, throughout his career, been active in development of university, industry and government partnerships. In addition to MIOH, such partnerships include the Greenfield Coalition, a National Science Foundation Engineering Education Center led by UDM, and the PD-21 product development partnership with MIT, RIT, the US Navy and six major corporations.
Before joining UDM in 1991, Dean Hanifin directed the launch and growth of the manufacturing center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute into a 300-person collaborative research/technology center. Earlier he held positions in the computer, aerospace and automotive industries before moving to academia.
Dean Hanifin's recent board positions include Engineering Society of Detroit, Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Ford Design Institute. He completed his bachelors, master's and doctor of engineering degrees at the University of Detroit.
