Richard Gerth, Ph.D. is a research scientist in the Manufacturing, Engineering and Technology group at the Center for Automotive Research.
Dr. Gerth’s research interests are in the area of innovation and product development, quality engineering and lean manufacturing, dimensional control in body manufacturing and assembly, and virtual engineering and embedded systems. He is currently the principal investigator of the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) Digital Body Development System project. This 5 year, $10.6 million dollar effort is a collaboration of Ford, GM, Siemens PLM, Hexagon Metrology, Atlas Tooling, Diversified Tooling Group, TechTeam Government Solutions, and The University of Michigan. The goal of the project is to develop and implement a decision support system to help engineers resolve launch problems in a virtual functional build environment and improve the speed of launch.
Prior to joining CAR, Dr. Gerth was a tenured professor at Ohio University in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering, where he taught courses in advanced statistics and total quality management, and conducted research for NASA, GE Aircraft Engines, Hewlett-Packard, and the Technishe Hochschule in Aachen, Germany. He has over 30 refereed publications and has presented at numerous national and international conferences. Dr. Gerth is a two-time NASA summer faculty fellow, USAF summer research fellow, and the recipient of the Ford Customer Driven Quality Award. He is an active member of SAE.
