Name: John M. DeCicco, Ph.D.
Title: Senior Fellow, Automotive Strategies
Company: Environmental Defense Fund
Presentation: Coming Soon

John DeCicco is senior fellow for Automotive Strategies at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a private, non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the environmental rights of all people including future generations. As part of EDF's National Climate Campaign, he focuses on ways to reduce the global warming impact of the U.S. transportation sector.

Dr. DeCicco is a nationally recognized expert on automotive energy and environmental issues. He specializes in analysis of transportation sector greenhouse gas emissions and oil consumption, covering topics such as vehicle and fuel technologies, air pollution, oil dependence and broader social and environmental impacts of transportation. His work includes advising policy makers, industry and public interest groups; developing market-based solutions that balance the needs of business, consumers and the environment; in-depth assessment of technologies and design strategies; and providing information for consumers and media. A special interest is enhancing public institutional capacity for constructively confronting the "cars vs. climate" challenge.

Dr. DeCicco's recent studies include Global Warming on the Road, Automakers' Corporate Carbon Burdens, and Putting the Brakes on U.S. Oil Demand. He has four books and over 70 published papers and reports to his credit. Over the years he has led influential studies of vehicle efficiency, covering conventional options such as better engines, improved transmissions, and lightweight materials as well as new options such as hybrid-electric drive and other advanced technologies, including an in-depth assessment of fuel cell vehicles. He has also examined the economics of transportation energy use and changes vehicle technology, and co-authored economy-wide energy and climate studies.

Dr. DeCicco is also a leader in addressing the consumer side of automotive environmental issues. He pioneered consumer-oriented green vehicle ratings in the United States as the creator of ACEEE's Green Book: The Environmental Guide to Cars and Trucks (launched in 1998 in a previous capacity). He spearheaded EDF's partnership with Yahoo! Autos to make consumer-friendly Green Ratings widely available on the web.

Dr. DeCicco is active in SAE (the Society of Automotive Engineers) as well as the National Research Council's Transportation Research Board (TRB), for which he chaired the Energy Committee from 1996-2000. He received his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Princeton University in 1988.

The family friendly Partners Program is available for all attendee families. In addition, the Resort and surrounding Traverse City area have numerous opportunities for family fun. Contact the Traverse City Convention Bureau at www.visittraversecity.com or (800) 872-8377.

Your spouse or partner is welcome at all of the social hours and the Wednesday evening dinner. (Children are not permitted at the Monday - Thursday social hours and the Wednesday evening event. Alternative activities are planned and/or available.)

The seminars are designed to foster a casual atmosphere for the informal exchange of ideas. Business casual is appropriate. Some attendees choose business attire (suits or sport coats), particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. Others wear more casual polo shirts and slacks.

These are very informal events. Attire will vary from sport coats to polo shirts and slacks (for men) and from summer dresses and skirts to pants and shirts (for women).

Yes; continental breakfast and lunch are served each day. Social hours are hosted Monday through Thursday evening. In addition, registration on Wednesday or Thursday includes a dinner and party on Wednesday evening (hopefully outside, overlooking the Grand Traverse Bay).
