Dr. Lieberman is the automotive industry senior manager for IBM Research. In this role he is responsible for the division's technical strategy in support of the Industry, and is the research relationship manager working on IBM’s Automotive Industry's Global Leadership Team. Previously, Dr. Lieberman was the Research Division's program manager, Sales and Distribution Relationship, and was responsible for planning and coordinating the joint strategy between IBM’s Sales & Distribution group and the Research Division. He was also Research’s liaison with the Industrial Sector, helping to formulate the technical strategy in support of IBM’s manufacturing and process customers.
Dr. Lieberman joined IBM in 1974 as a research staff member on the Automation Research project in the Research Division. He has performed research in the areas of robotics software, geometric modeling, and machine vision. Since 1980 his responsibilities included technical planning and management of research in computer-based manufacturing. From 1988 to 1991 he was program manager for CIM Integration at IBM's corporate headquarters where he helped form the technical strategy for IBM's computer integrated manufacturing programs. In the late 1990’s Dr. Lieberman headed IBM Research’s Automotive Solutions Lab which developed many of the technologies used in the emerging telematics business; he holds four patents related to telematics and vehicle diagnostics.
Dr. Lieberman received B.S. in electrical engineering and Ph.D. in computer and information sciences, degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 and 1974.
